Cosmetic Gingival Surgery
Cosmetic gingival surgery is a great option in the correction of a smile line that may have been affected by gingival recession, congenital gum conditions and tissue defects as a result of disease or tooth loss .
Minor tissue grafts can be used to transfer healthy tissue, to cover regions where gum is absent or to augment tissue around implants and other prostheses.
In other cases removal is sometimes required for excessive gums that obscure the full natural shape of crowns or for the restriction of lip retraction in “gummy smiles”.
Gingival recession is the most common complaint, and the single largest reason cosmetic gingival surgery is requested. Recession can be caused by a number of factors, and will eventually result in areas of sensitivity in addition to a cosmetic defect. This can be remedied by covering these areas of loss with connective tissue transplanted from other regions of the mouth.
Frenectomy
Another common corrective surgery, which serves a dual function of satisfying cosmetics and improving function, is the release of congenital gum attachments which may unnecessarily tether areas of lips, cheek or tongue to nearby gums. The release of these tethered regions provide better speech, cleaning or orthodontic tooth movement.
